“It’s always been a dream of mine to work on a Western,” says Hassie Harrison, who plays Laramie on the hit drama Yellowstone, which just concluded its fourth season. “I grew up in Texas, so I was thrilled to get to play a character that let me ride a horse.”

There was more than just riding that made the show’s most recent season exciting for its stars, however. After previously filming the show in both Park City, Utah and on location in Montana, the series moved exclusively to Big Sky Country to film its latest episodes. “We all got to live there and have the true experience,” Harrison, who also stars in the comedy series Tacoma FD, explains, “which was such a blessing.”

Here, Harrison opens her personal camera roll to T&C to share a behind-the-scenes look at Yellowstone, and the moments that didn’t make it on screen.

"We usually get a couple of scripts at a time, but by the time I showed up in Montana, they gave me all of them. I took this picture on the front porch of the home I stayed in while we were filming. Montana is one of my favorite places in the world—look at the view!—and it was such an honor to work on my character in such an epic place. The ranch I stayed on also had cattle, you can see them in the foreground. This is a snippet of what my home life was like in the four months that I was there."

"This was taken by Jefferson White, who was always walking around with amazing vintage cameras and took such incredible photos. He’s one of my favorite people on the show, he’s so sweet and supportive, and when I joined the show he reached out to make sure I had company or knew where to grab dinner. That’s the real bunkhouse we shoot in behind me and this felt like it captured my life on set perfectly."

"This is Rover! The house I rented just happened to come with a dog, which was a blessing since I was spending so much time alone and it was nice to have the company. He was an outside dog according to the two guys who run the ranch, but when I was there he was an inside dog. We’d go on adventures and walks, and one day I was practicing roping in my yard, and he showed up with this huge spine and started chewing on it like it was any other bone. I thought it was very funny."

"It's me and Jen Landon. I love this gal so much. She and I have become really good friends, and I’ve in awe of her work and what she’s done with her character. People always ask me if she speaks with her character’s accent, but she most certainly does not. This was on our last day of filming, but now we FaceTime regularly."

"I made a lot of bonfires while I was in Montana. I thought the juxtaposition of the fire and ice in this photo was pretty epic, it was the background on my phone for a long while."

"My character’s name is Laramie, and this was one of the wrangler’s trailers, so I had to hop up there and snap a photo. One of RAM’s pickup trucks is also called the Laramie, so naturally I’m thinking that I need to get one."

"Here's a snapshot from a video of me practicing roping. One of my favorite parts of this experience was my week of cowboy camp; we did a rodeo at the end, which I won with three other people. Jason Rodriguez is our head stunt guy, and he’s pulling a dummy which I’d rope while riding on a horse."

"Here I am in my trailer getting ready for a night shoot. It was Halloween and I felt like I needed a behind-the-scenes shot of me. You have a lot more time in your trailer shooting during the pandemic. If I’m being honest, I’ll do some doom scrolling on my phone until I realize that’s not healthy. When I’m being my higher self, I’m reading or writing or FaceTiming with friends."

"These are three of the realest cowboys on our show. I love that they all happened to show up that day dressed in denim; they’re three sweet, supportive guys who make the show as authentic as it is by making sure everybody’s holding their reins right and looking good on their horses."

"Eden Brolin, Jen Landon, and me are the three girls on the show, and we developed a real sisterhood. We’d go on hikes together and play poker and had a fun time. I love this photo of us, from our last day of shooting when everyone was getting sentimental."

"Last November is when we started to get snow on set, and I loved it so much. Living in California the last 10 years, I haven’t gotten to see that much snow, so I loved going on hikes and adventures. This night, I was just driving around and had to stop to appreciate how much it looked like a snow globe."

"This is me with the father-son duo Mark and Jordan Warrack. Mark is a wrangler and Jordan does some of the coolest stunts on the show. They’re legends in the industry; they’re probably connected to any Western you can see."

"Montana is such a magical place. This is one of many rainbows on my phone. I get giddy whenever I see one, I’d always get out of my car and take a picture. A lot of these pictures are just a love letter to Montana."
