In recent years, we have observed a huge influx of vocabulary borrowed from English into Polish; these are words either of English origin or borrowed through English. At the same time, the number and variety of scholarly investigations trying to illustrate the extent of anglicisms in Polish and systematise the semantic fields which draw from English the most have increased. Most of them deal with the latest borrowings, often representing professional jargon or spoken language. In this paper we will discuss anglicisms which entered Polish over sixty years ago and remained in the sports lexicon until today. The article is a tribute to the late professor Jacek Fisiak, who offered the first in-depth analysis of sports vocabulary borrowed from English into Polish. His Ph.D. monograph (1961) and the subsequent article (1964) have shown a special place of sports terminology among anglicisms in Polish. The lexical items which Fisiak collected in the early sixties of the twentieth century have been tested not only in terms of their fate, but also the degree of grammatical and orthographic assimilation, as well as semantic changes the lexemes have undergone. The study is based on two large corpora of Polish: the Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego and Odkrywka, comprising texts from the 18 th century until the present time.
Anglicisms Related to Football in Polish and Russian

The book is aimed at examining Anglicisms within the language of football in two Slavic languages, Polish and Russian. The comparison of the number and character of this group of English-based borrowings in the languages was performed on the basis of two types of texts representing two varieties of the football language – football regulations and online football press articles. The book consists of five chapters. The first four of them constitute a theoretical introduction into the subject, whereas the last one bids to make a contribution to the present state of knowledge of this field. The first chapter describes the concept of linguistic borrowing as one of the results of the phenomenon of language contact, as well as various classifications of borrowings and the processes of adaptation of linguistic borrowings. A general overview of Polish-English and Russian-English language contacts, as well as of Anglicisms in Polish and Russian and their adaptation at the levels of orthography, phonology, morphology and semantics is presented in the second chapter. The third chapter characterises language for special purposes and juxtaposes it with the concepts of language for general purposes and jargon. The fourth chapter is concerned with the language for special purposes where the Anglicisms were analysed – the language of football, divided into sub-languages in accordance with the remarks of previous studies. The last chapter analyses Anglicisms in Polish and Russian translations of FIFA Laws of the Game and a corpus of 84 online football press articles (taken from the online issuses of two Polish newspapers: Przegląd Sportowy and Sport.pl [Gazeta Wyborcza], as well as two Russian newspapers: Спорт-экспресс and Российская Газета).
English linguistic influence on Standard and American varieties of Polish: A comparative study

The paper examines the different ways in which English linguistic material is borrowed and adapted by two varieties of Polish, Standard Polish spoken in Poland and American Polish used by the Polish diaspora in the US. The aim of the study is to compare the factors that determine the type and range of loans in both varieties of Polish. The comparison of the ways in which Standard and American Polishes are influenced and shaped by English embraces three main areas: 1) types of loans as products of the borrowing process (such as loanwords, semantic loans, loan translations, syntactic calques, etc.), 2) adaptation of loanwords with reference to phonological, graphic, morphological and semantic adaptation, and 3) semantic fields that are most heavily affected by the borrowing process. The findings of the analysis help to identify the reasons for the discrepancies in the treatment of the English language material in the two varieties of Polish.

W niniejszej pracy dyplomowej zostały poddane analizie językoznawczej wybrane zapożyczenia językowe w dziedzinie ekonomii i biznesu. Autor w niniejszej pracy dyplomowej wyszczególnił dwa cele badawcze, a mianowicie: 1. angielskie zapożyczenia językowe w dziedzinie ekonomii łatwo ulegają asymilacji do systemu języka polskiego, 2. pokazanie jakie są najnowsze tendencje językowe przy przenoszeniu zapożyczeń angielskich na grunt języka polskiego. Niniejsza praca dyplomowa została podzielona na trzy rozdziały. W pierwszym rozdziale najpierw przedstawiono różne definicje związane z procesem zapożyczania językowego. Następnie zaprezentowano podział zapożyczeń ze względu na różne kryteria. Z kolei w ostatnim podrozdziale zostały podane przyczyny wprowadzania zapożyczeń językowych z różnych języków obcych. W drugim rozdziale zaprezentowano cztery rodzaje adaptacji jakim podlegają zapożyczenia językowe, a mianowicie: graficzną, fonologiczną, morfologiczną oraz semantyczną. Rozdział 3, z kolei, ilustruje analizę językoznawczą wybranych zapożyczeń w dziedzinie ekonomii i biznesu a także przedstawia wyniki tej analizy. Wyniki przeprowadzonego badania wykazały, że najnowsze zapożyczenia angielskie w dziedzinie ekonomii i biznesu stosunkowo łatwo ulegają asymilacji do systemu języka polskiego.

The onset of Professor Jacek Fisiak's scholarly career is marked by his 1961 Ph.D. dissertation devoted to the lexical influence of English upon Polish. This study, conducted 55 years ago, offers a multilayered analysis and sets the standards of studies on lexical transfer from English to Polish for the years to come. The present article is a tribute to Fisiak's first scholarly endeavor; it examines the fate of lexical items comprising Fisiak's corpus in the second decade of the 21 st century. More specifically, by conducting searches in the National Corpus of Polish as well as a Google search, the paper checks which borrowings to the Polish language listed and scrutinized by Fisiak gained popularity, which fell out of use, and which underwent semantic changes.
