      North Carolina Senate gives initial approval to legalizing medical marijuana

        The North Carolina Senate has given its initial approval to legalizing medical marijuana. The Senate voted 33-9 on Thursday in favor of a measure that would legalize the medical use of pot, with nine Republicans breaking from the rest of the party to oppose it. If approved in a second vote, the bill would go to the state House, which has historically blocked Senate attempts to legalize the drug’s medical use. The medical marijuana component was added to a bill that originally focused on regulating federally legal hemp products. Those provisions still remain in the bill.
